The gradual rise in global temperatures due to the emission of greenhouse gases has led to various adverse consequences, ranging from extreme weather events to sea-level rise. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the issue, discussing its causes, impacts, and potential solutions.

Causes of Climate Change: The primary driver of climate change is the accumulation of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), in the atmosphere. The burning of fossil fuels for energy production, deforestation, industrial processes, and agricultural activities are the main sources of these emissions (IPCC, 2018). These gases trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere, leading to a gradual increase in global temperatures—a phenomenon known as the greenhouse effect.

Mitigation involves reducing greenhouse gas emissions by transitioning to renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency, and implementing sustainable land-use practices. Governments, businesses, and individuals play pivotal roles in reducing emissions through policy changes and responsible consumption (UNFCCC, n.d.). Adaptation strategies, on the other hand, focus on building resilience in the face of changing climate conditions. This includes designing climate-resilient infrastructure, implementing water management strategies, and developing early warning systems for extreme weather events.

International Cooperation and Agreements: Global cooperation is crucial to effectively combat climate change. The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, represents a landmark international effort to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, aiming for a 1.5-degree target. Countries committed to submitting nationally determined contributions (NDCs) outlining their emission reduction targets and strategies (UNFCCC, 2015). Ongoing collaboration, policy alignment, and innovation are essential to achieve the goals set out in this agreement.
